Morocco begin U17 AFCON title defence on home soil against Tunisia

Morocco will launch their title defence on home soil when the 2026 Under-17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) kicks off on 13 May in Rabat.

The hosts, who lifted the trophy at the previous edition, begin the tournament against Tunisia at the Prince Moulay El Hassan Stadium. The venue will also stage the semi-finals and final on 2 June.

Morocco are staging the competition for the second successive time, underlining the country’s growing influence in African football.

Their recent success at youth level has been widely linked to long-term investment and development structures overseen by the Royal Moroccan Football Federation.

The current generation, often referred to as the “Atlas Cubs”, arrive with high expectations as they look to confirm their continental dominance. Their progress reflects a broader national strategy that has placed Morocco among the leading footballing nations on the continent.

Beyond the pitch, the tournament forms part of a wider run of major events being hosted in the country. Morocco is preparing to co-host the 2030 FIFA World Cup and will also stage multiple continental competitions in 2026, reinforcing its status as a key hub for the sport.

The group stage matches will be played at the Mohammed VI Football Complex, a state-of-the-art training centre that has become central to the nation’s football infrastructure.

As well as the continental title, teams will be competing for qualification places at the next FIFA U-17 World Cup, offering young players a pathway to the global stage.
